The Ol' Screen Door, Downstairs
I hear a motor through the ol’ screen door
From the second floor
Of empty rooms and “might-have-beens”
Good-bye taxi in the pouring rain
It waits for me. Hope it drives away the pain
You left behind the ties that bind.
Guess I was blind to all your alibis
And the lies
I remember how you held me so
Before the rain, so long ago
When I carried you
Through the ol’ screen door downstairs
There’s nothing up here anymore
Not a thing worth stayin’ for
All’s left are torn-up memories
Scattered on the bedroom floor
I’m just wishin’ for more honesty
In the arms of one who cares
Someday I hope to find it
Outside the ol’ screen door downstairs
I still remember when the ol’ screen door
Was something more
Than an exit for a broken heart
There was a time when I thought you were mine
At breakfast time we’d laugh and spill our souls
I never knew you wouldn't’t be true
The sky of blue you painted me was just ahead
Of a storm
We’d sit to have a mornin’ cup
Then you’d take my hand and lead me up
Where we’d forget
About the mess we left downstairs
There’s nothing up here anymore
Not a thing worth stayin’ for
All’s left are torn-up memories
Scattered on the bedroom floor
I’m just wishin’ for more honesty
In the arms of one who cares
Someday I hope to find it
Outside the ol’ screen door downstairs
Someday I hope to find it
Outside the ol’ screen door downstairs
